Emergency Care
Orthodontic emergencies are usually minor and can often be managed at home until you can visit our office. At Bright Orthodontics, Dr. Adam Veit and our team are here to help you stay comfortable and keep your treatment on track.
If you are ever unsure about what to do, please contact our office for guidance.
Emergencies Related to Orthodontic Appliances
Issues with braces or appliances are the most common and are usually not urgent, but they should still be addressed to avoid discomfort or delays in treatment.
Soreness from Braces or Appliances
It is normal to experience some soreness when braces are first placed or adjusted. Your teeth, gums, lips, and cheeks may feel tender for a few days.
To relieve discomfort:
- Rinse with warm salt water (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of water)
- Take over-the-counter pain relief if needed
- Use orthodontic wax to reduce irritation
This discomfort is temporary and will improve as your mouth adjusts.
Loose Teeth
Teeth may feel slightly loose during orthodontic treatment. This is normal and necessary for teeth to move into proper alignment.
Once treatment is complete, your teeth will stabilize.
Loose Wires or Bands
If a wire or band becomes loose, contact our office to schedule a repair.
In the meantime:
- Gently move the wire into place with a pencil eraser
- Cover the area with wax or a wet cotton ball to reduce irritation
If any piece comes off, save it and bring it to your appointment.
Loose Brackets
If a bracket becomes loose:
- Leave it in place if still attached to the wire
- Apply wax if it causes discomfort
- If it comes off completely, store it safely and bring it with you
Call our office so we can repair it promptly.
Poking Wires
If a wire is poking or causing irritation:
- Try gently pushing it into place with a soft object
- Use orthodontic wax to cover the area
If the issue continues, contact our office for an adjustment.
Direct Injuries to the Mouth or Teeth
Injuries involving the teeth, gums, or jaw require prompt attention and may be more urgent than appliance-related issues.
If you experience an injury:
- Contact our office immediately
- You may also need to contact your general dentist
Examples of injuries include:
- A chipped, cracked, or knocked-out tooth
- Trauma to the jaw or face
- Bleeding or swelling in the mouth
Quick action helps prevent further complications and protects your oral health.
Protecting Your Braces and Smile
If you play sports, especially contact sports, wearing a mouthguard is strongly recommended. A properly fitted mouthguard helps protect your teeth, braces, and soft tissues from injury.
